Seven-year-old Tanyaradza Masendeke of Epworth, near Harare, who suffers from Xeroderma pigmentosum and has developed cancer on her tongue, is seeking assistance to travel to South Africa for a crucial operation.

Xeroderma pigmentosum, which is commonly known as XP, is an inherited condition characterised by an extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet rays from sunlight.

This condition mostly affects the eyes and areas of skin exposed to the sun.

Some affected individuals also have problems involving the nervous system.Tanya Chirenje

The operation is due to take place at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town on January 13, but she could fail to travel as her parents are failing to raise funds to travel and pay for the operation.

Her mother, Anna Chirenje, said she needed R10 900 for the operation and $250 for transport and food while in South Africa.

“She has tumors that grow on her tongue and they need to be removed. We have no money and are, therefore, appealing for help so that the girl can have a chance to a normal life,” Chirenje said.
